Health Care Debate

Mistaken Necessity

Whenever a politician campaigns for free health care, he always comes off as the one who takes the moral high ground, even if his intended plans are impractical. Regardless of whether or not national free health care is possible, it is definitely not morally correct, and anyone who campaigns for it is definitely not on solid moral ground. Such a deception does not so easily reveal, and appear immediately obvious to the average person just why making sure everyone is healthy is not moral. In short, health care has very real costs, and these costs can only come from private citizens who in reality have no desire to slave away at their jobs, only to have their rewards taken and redistributed to provide health care for the nation. To put it in perspective, if a thief came to someone’s house and robbed them, but told them that the proceeds would go towards paying his bills, would they not call the police? But it seems as if the government has the right to rob though they condemn the thiefs that would do the very same thing. In fact, this action would seem to contradict the very reason government was established for in the first place. Government was originally established to protect individuals against criminals, whether it be the British demanding undue taxes without representation, or common thieves. Ultimately, a politician strives to get himself re-elected. To do this, a politician will attempt to convince the general public to pass new measures that would ultimately gain him more votes. Such measures, as one can guess, are usually those that give services to the greatest number of people for free. What would get a politician reelected and what is constitutional, however, are not always the same. If one were to compare the original text of the constitution with the proposed health care bill one would find it unconstitutional. The entitlement to medical care and the means of its finance violate the constitution.

Nowhere in the constitution can one find the right to tax in order to secure healthcare for all. The only thing vague enough that could perhaps justify such taxes would be the necessary and proper clause. The Necessary and Proper Clause, however, does not apply to medical care. It gives the government the right to make “all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof” (Wikipedia.com). Although given this statements vagueness, the restrictions of the necessary and proper clause are so tight that even health care can not slip through. Medical care has nothing to do with the governments foregoing powers or any other powers in the constitution. In fact it is not even listed or hinted anywhere in the constitution. However politicians skew what is necessary for the betterment of society by being “very clever in spreading these benefits all across the economic spectrum so that nearly everyone has some stake in continuing the status quo,”(HawaiiReporter.com). Even so, these benefits do not please all, and some were better off before these benefits were distributed. Obama a day or so ago stated that persons making over $200,000 will be taxed an additional one percent to their existing medical care tax. This promotes inequality to those who work tediously to make money which is rightfully theirs and the government allocating peoples money to those who are less fortunate. In the tax bill in the constitution consisting of “section 8 [nowhere] does it give congress the power to tax people for betterment of others” (ConstitutionUS.com). America still lives with health care as an option and personal preference. Medical care is neither an enumerated or implied power. The only thought to be applied clause left is the commerce clause. However that does not apply, for the following reasons. The constitution defines this clause to give congress the right “to regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes,” (USConstitution). Health care is not commerce between states. Health care is an individual mandate which has nothing to do with that clause, and thus can not be applied. Also, because not buying health insurance is not commerce then the same can be proved vise versa. A majority of cases “similar to mandatory health care, are in favor of blocking the application of the commerce clause” (Ken Cuccinelli). Because such cases exist and are quite known it does not give 100% chance that health care would have been blocked, but it does indeed have a meaning. This meaning includes that as currently the health care bill goes once again with changes through Congress some democrats may finally see how much damage it would cost America and thus vote against it. The only power of the government left that is thought to apply to the constitution is the power to tax. The power to tax solely consists of the tax bill which is “Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States” (USConstitution). Government therefore has the power to tax only so it can continue to protect citizens from criminals, whether they be foreign countries or thieves, and ultimately protect their private property. This means that taxing to provide healthcare is actually a violation of the government’s power to tax.

Medical insurance is not a right, but is instead a luxury. Nowhere does the constitution grant an individual the right to medical care. Americans seems to believe they have “much entitlement in todays economy. However, currently Americans are entitled only to social security” (HawaiiReporter.com). Politicians are to blame for leading people to believe in endless entitlements. However this is all part of their plan, in which later after robbing people of all their money, all their so called rights in which they are entitled to will fade away. This cycle has spun for too long. People do not speak up because of the “mistaken belief that such collapse can never happen. “(HawaiiReporter.com). One day when the cycle does fail, probably through massive debt or a lack of incentive to work, even average Americans will see how these proposed rights from politicians are entirely fake and are indeed not rights guaranteed under the constitution. Because medical care is not an entitlement it thus then becomes a personal preference and consequently a luxury. All luxuries come at costs.

Even with current estimates and suppositions, “health care spending costs are bound to increase. Not only will this spending consume the government’s money but families and businesses too. This higher spending would increase our future national budget deficit already projected to total about $9 trillion over the next decade. New taxes will not entirely finance this new spending, however could be “exclusively” used to slowly pay down our deficit” (Newsweek.com).

How can this not be called a luxury, if its costs are so high that the government cannot fully finance it and will cause the rest of America to mainly pay for it? Medical care has been a personal preference for a long time. What causes it to somehow out of the blue become a right and an entitlement? The answer is quite clear; if the government and its politicians keep it up soon Americans will be entitled to everything and shortly after nothing.

The entitlement to Medical care is no where described in the constitution. The government has no business with individual mandate and preference. Since the time of the framing of the constitution, the issue of healthcare has never before been considered a necessity. The entitlement to medical care actually violates the premises on which the constitution was founded, mainly protection against criminals. Will the robbers eventually become the good guys? How can such morals of entitlement to health care be so skewed? In short, if medical care is constitutional than why is it that criminals are sitting in jail and the government is not?

POINT OF NO RETURN

That voice which I hear

So soft, warm and kind

Could it be he?

Has the angel of music

Finally arrived?

The voice vows to give me lessons

But then he asks of me to

Never marry anyone

And to love only him

If I were to pursue the lessons

But can this promise be kept?

However this creates a problem

My love for Raoul is irresistible

But to loose the angel forever,

Who my father swore I would be taught by

Only once he went to heaven.

After tricking me into darkness

His voice began to horrify me

I realize then that this angel

Is also the Phantom of the Opera

He seizes me and puts me on a boat

Covering my mouth so

No one would hear my screams.

What was I to think?

After hearing murder cases

Involving the phantom,

What had he in store

For me?

Inviting me to his layer,

Assuring that I am safe

As long as I don’t touch his mask

That hidden faces identity

Simply too tempting to not

So I tear it off.

What is to happen?

He says now I may never leave

For once I have seen his face

I must be his wife and live with

His hideousness forever.

With great audacity

I say if he gives me my liberty

I will visit him on my own will

I lied at my best convincing him

That I do not care how he

Look under his mask.

He kidnaps me on the day Raoul

And I planned our escape and gives

Me two options…

To turn the scorpion wheel meaning

The phantom and myself

Would get married and live a normal life

Or the grasshopper wheel which would result

In Parris being blown up and everyone would die.

This freighting angel

And his love for me

Will it be Rauel and death?

Or marriage and life with the

Phantom of the Opera?

LAST 3 MINUTES

Three minutes left of G/H/ track and Lilli would be out, screaming, and running down the school hallways excited that school was over and her party at home was soon to start. But Lilli could not wait any longer during those three minutes, that she began to loaf around and soon Mr.B noticed Lilli not paying attention to him. Mr.B in his comic and bedazzled mood decided to call on Lilli purposely to see what she would say.

“Lilli who is your nemesis, reveal, be truthful?” said Mr.B. Lillie being an extremely unreclusive kid said you, yes you Mr.Ballaban! Why do you think everyone calls you a creeper, and Mr. sharkypoo behind your back. What do you think we talk about when ever you leave the room?”Suddenly, out of the blue, Mr.B could not take it anymore, so irate, and enraged, sent Lilli out to the hallway. Considering the glass window is transparent Lilli began to laugh at Mr.B’s punishment, and unusually Mr.B became tentative puzzled at Lillis action. With great audacity Mr.B opened the class door wide and called Lili back in waiting for an apology. Adding bunches of superfluous words Lilli inveigled Mr.B to forgive her. But before that, a big altercation occurred that it was almost like Mr.B was debating Lilli such like in a debate tournament. This day was the complete opposite of mediocre that some fragments of their arguments were put into the joke book. Lilli was in a state of consternation that Mr.B only said he forgave her because he did not want to argue with her anymore. Scared that he would lower her grades, she munificently secretly took out her phone and texted a flower agency to bring in a bunch of a dozen ruby red roses to be delivered in less that 3 minutes. She did not even have second thoughts of the idea, forgetting the costs, and thinking about only the future. After all this commotion, enfeebled, Mr. Ballaban almost jumped when there was a knock on the door and the carry man was holding roses.

“You have the wrong room sir; I did not order any flowers! Anyway who is it from?”

“Says from Lilli E. note: Sorry, but it is my birthday and I just can’t wait to get outa your class. Sorry for transgressing, haha, never mind, I just had to use this word, and had no where else to put it” said the flower guy from Lilli which in this case is actually from me about the transgressing part! That was a great 3 minutes of Lilies life being 15! To bad it never happened!! Happy Birthday Lilli, and I hope your birthday went much better then my three minute story!!!! By the way welcome to your first G/H/ track being 15!!!

Crucible Essay

Prompt: IS Proctors decision at the end of the book right or wrong?

Sunset

The situation of life or death does not morally obligate Proctor to choose one way or the other. It is not a moral decision because it does not deprive other individuals of their free will. The Crucible begins with all the towns people accusing each other of being in allegiance with the devil, an action that society considers worthy of hanging. To save themselves from hanging, one could confess to the charge and accuse others of frolicking with the devil, or cone could hang to refrain from lying and violating one’s principles. When the court prompts John to confess, he pleads guilty to his own “crime”, however when they ask him to report others, he refuses. It is unknown at this point whether John believes it is right of wrong to not confess, however he publicly announces that he will not accuse others because people “think to go like saints. I like not to spoil their names” (Miller 130). He thinks people, who plead innocent and will not lie to save their lives, die like saints. Rebecca Nurse is charged for witch craft, the elderly, most respectable, faithful, and honest woman in the town. John thinks that those like her will do what she will because even she will die like a saint. Also, he confesses his own “crime”, however he believes to report others for their crimes is not in his place. After John Proctor orally confesses to the charge, the court asks him to sign a paper for proof. They tell him it is a necessity for it to be signed for his confession, in order to set an example for others not to deal with the Devil. However, almost never has an accused person been asked to sign a confession which will later become public for everyone to see. The court explains to John to sign it already if he wishes to live after sunrise. John reacts exclaiming there is a huge difference between the two and “what others say and what I sign to is not the same!” (Miller 132). Procter sets with the thought that when one orally confesses, the effects entirely differ than when a signed confession is put up publicly. When people talk about it, each will change the story, because of hearing it differently. Proof will always live, while gossip dies. In addition, because the story will keep changing perhaps if he chooses not to sign it, and that would be allowed, then his families reputation would not be as disgraced. Because choosing to live or to die is not a moral decision it thus then becomes a personal decision. The Crucible revolves around Proctor’s desire to keep his reputation clean and straight. He undergoes decisions which have lasting consequences, such as worrying if an action will hurt others and whether or not the decision is right. For example, he admits to adultery with Abigail in court to sacrifice himself for his wife. However this problem is already solved for Proctor because his decision solely bases on himself. As his character changes so too do his decisions. At the beginning John appears to believe in the church, but eventually he comes to make decisions on his own. The first major one includes not signing the confession paper “because [he] lie[s] and sign[s] [himself] to lies! Because [he believes he is] not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” (Miller 133). The symbolism of a lie is that most confessions in Salem are all lies for people to save themselves from dying. John is sick of all these lies, because first he lies about doing the crime, and then to sign the confession would be signing himself to another lie. As a result John proctor does not wish to lie to himself any more even if that is only way to save his life. Also the dust on them that hang represents those who stood silent in order not to lie. Proctor going against their actions would be putting dust on the innocent. This signifies lies and wrong choices piling over the right choices until right choices exist no more. As long as John Proctor’s reputation is blank he still longs to live. However, if his reputation is dirty, he sees no reason to continue living. Everyday John Proctor strives to save his name and this time would definitely be no exception “because [he] cannot have another in my life! (…) Ho may [he] live without [his] name? [He] gives [society his] soul; leave [him his] name” (Miller 133). At his last attempts to save his reputation he strives to save his name. He claims that he already gives the court his confession, which symbolically is giving them his soul, and the last thing he wants is for them to take is his name along with it. If taken his name it would follow to be blackened. Either way Proctor realizes that his reputation will be ruined, thus now giving him no personal reason to sign the confession and continue to live.

Proctor is not morally obligated to make a decision one way or the other because his decision does not deprive anyone of their free will. Because he is not morally obligated, a decision that is made based on his own beliefs rather than those of the church is better than one which simply follows what society desires. Those like Proctor who make personal choices realize that decisions, regardless of any other principles but their own, consequently are right for them. Proctor thus makes the right decision.

5 Afghan Notes

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

1. The operation is likely to be tedious and unpleasant for the military because not only is this operation going to be speedy, causing pressure on time, but the atmosphere of the landlocked country which includes not up to date and barely working public works, surely doesn’t help.

2. The POTUS clearly says that the withdrawal of troops is “conditions based”. Although he promises to begin pulling the forces out, if it all depend on the conditions, then we might in fact never fully pull the forces out and be stuck there. Somehow the wording given seems to try to cover up the fact that the US simply does not really have a plan to pull troops out successfully.

3. The advantages include the fact that the set date may pursue people to rap up in Afgan and get out, considering there is almost no time. It may even say that setting a date and announcing it publicly tells people Obama is not lying and he really means it. The disadvantages, are that time could put pressure on people which makes them work less efficiently, and thus making the operation a failure.

4. The time is so short because Obama thinks Americans are getting weary of the chances of war and more devastating things causing an effect on our lives. With this weary it makes people less believe in Obama’s plan to success and with these ideas in peoples head, they will not want or either not believe in Obama thus causing ideas of rebellion. Consequently, the list is continues.

5. Obama states so little about Karzai because everyone knows he is corrupt and America does not want to seem as if their partnering with an incapable and unreliable leader who represents their country.

A Seperate Peace Essay Outline

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

INTRO: Innocence in children results from the blank state that they are born into. From the moment of their conception, however, children begin to acquire knowledge through experience. With this new knowledge, a child will begin to see the world differently, more clearly. This gradual acquisition of knowledge results in a marked change in the child, for a loss of innocence matches perfectly the gain in clarity.

THESIS: In John Knowles A Separate Peace, the knowledge that Gene Forrester acquires replaces his innocence, thus changing him in such a way so as to make him better suited to live in the harsh reality called life.

TOPIC SENTENCE: Gene’s initial blank state slowly fills to ultimately allow him to live within society.

SUB1: Initially, Gene is innocent due to his lack of experience in the real world.

QUOTES:

“of what peace was like, we boys of sixteen. We registered with no draft board, we had taken no physical examinations. We were carefree and wild, and I suppose we could be thought of as a sign of the life the war was being fought to preserve.”(Knowles 24).

“The next morning I saw dawn for the first time.” (Knowles 49)

SUB2: As time progresses Gene gains more experience allowing him to see the evils in reality.

QUOTES:

“But by now I no longer needed this vivid false identity; now I was acquiring, I felt, a sense for my own real authority and worth, I had had many new experiences and I was growing up”( Knowles 156).

“I did not cry then or ever about Finny.…I could not escape a felling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case” (Knowles 194).

Costs of Reality

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Innocence in children results from the blank state that they are born into. From the moment of their conception, however, children begin to acquire knowledge through experience. With this new knowledge, a child will begin to see the world differently, more clearly. This gradual acquisition of knowledge results in a marked change in the child, for a loss of innocence matches perfectly the gain in clarity. In John Knowles A Separate Peace, the knowledge that Gene Forrester acquires replaces his innocence, thus changing him to make him better suited to live in the harsh reality of life.

Gene’s initial blank state slowly fills to ultimately allow him to live within society. Initially, Gene is innocent due to his lack of experience in the real world. A Separate Peace is set against the backdrop of World War II which causes destruction and chaos to arise. The actions taken in war have regrettable consequences. Gene and the other students at the school do not even understand the war. Their innocence shelters away the evils in war, not allowing them to understand the difference between war and “what peace was like[..] [They] registered with no draft board, [they] had taken no physical examinations. [They] were carefree and wild, and […] could be thought of as a sign of the life the war was being fought to preserve”(Knowles 24). Because Devon students are kids, they cannot even begin to imagine what war truly is, for they are innocent. Children live life carelessly and wildly with no fears and no understanding of consequences. Boys of sixteen such as Gene, Brinker, Finny and Lep are full of life and think about the present rather that the future. This innocence clouds any understanding of the depth of war from their minds. The fact that they are kids explains their untroubled and careless lives, which is due to their innocence. Another indication of Gene’s innocence occurs when Gene and Finny bike to the beach, take a swim, take a walk and end the day with a good nights rest upon the sandy shore of the beach. Finny informs Gene of his secret that he is his best friend, and would not have taken anyone else that day to have fun except his best pal Gene. With these final words the two boys go to sleep. Gene wakes up to find Finny still sleeping and sees “dawn for the first time” (Knowles 49). Gene sees the sun rise for the very first time. The sunrise is the beginning of everything. The sunrise symbolizes a beginning of a journey that Gene must go on, a journey which results in the loss of his innocence and his ultimate change. As time progresses Gene gains more experience allowing him to see the evils in reality. Throughout the entire novel Gene seeks his true identity. At some points he attempts to copy others and at other points he slowly establishes his own. Finally, Gene “no longer [needs] this vivid false identity; now [he] was acquiring, [he] felt, a sense for [his] own real authority and worth, [he] had had many new experiences and [he] was growing up”( Knowles 156). Gene grows up due to new experiences. He gets a sense of his own identity by taking authority and not being the one controlled over anymore thus coming at the cost of innocence. Through his loss of innocence, he slowly begins to change and establish his own identity. Gene’s innocence and its ultimate death parallels closely his relationship with Finny, who is a symbol of innocence. Finny proves that when innocent, one only thinks about the good in life and ignores the negatives and evils in reality. From ignoring the harsh reality of war to ignoring the truth about Gene purposely jouncing the limb, Finny truly is innocent. Gene never cried about Finny, even when he “stood watching him being lowered into his family’s strait-laced burial ground outside of Boston. [Gene] could not escape a feeling that this was [his] own funeral, and you do not cry in that case.”(Knowles 194). Because Gene feels that Finny’s funeral is his own, he is actually metaphorically speaking of the death of his own innocence, thus ending the journey he began when he saw the dawn for the first time.

As he begins his term at Devon, Gene has no concept of war or even dawn. Slowly, experience begins to replace Gene’s innocence, finally ending in his loss of innocence, as shown by his feelings towards Finny’s funeral.
